I have two silkie hens and their colours could best be described as grey bodies with black pompoms on top of their heads - very cute, but I would love feedback on the following. Someone told me I need a white rooster to put over them to breed blues - what do others think? Also, if I decide to keep their colouring, how would I go about this?
I don't know anything about silkies, but black to white does produce blue.
Breed to a solid black or to a blue. The solid black should give you 50% black offspring. The other half should be the same "blue" as your hens if the grey you describe is really blue.
Any info much appreciated.

Breeding to a blue will give you half blues, one quarter black and one quarter splash (which are white with splashes of black here and there) if the grey you describe is blue.
If the grey is actually not "blue", still breed to the black. You may not get any that are identical in color to your grey hens, but you can keep a couple of your best cockerels to breed back to the grey hens and you're sure to get some grey offspring by the 2nd generation.
