Is there any way a hen can begin to sit before she ever begins to lay . My 4 month old silky is setting an three brown eggs . I dont think she has laid an eggs because all of my chickens lay brown eggs and I haven't recieved any white eggs . So is it possible or has she been laying and her eggs been laid somewhere else . thanks for any help . meme

Hi meme - sounds like your pullet is "practicing". I've had many pullets do this. Sounds like she'll be a great brooder! Take care - Colleen

Meme, I have had Silkie's for many years. They lay brown eggs, not white. If you are waiting for her to lay a white egg it is not going to happen, unless it is so pale brown that it is a creamy white. However, I only had one hen lay that light, most are a darker brown/tan.

Meme, I too, raised Silkies for about 25 years. I would never call their eggs Brown. Perhaps palest tan, but mainly just off-white! It is a matter of what each of us calls these colors, I guess, just as there are many shades of blue or green, it is just that to me, a Silkie egg has never been Brown. Brown to me is really brown as earth. But there are all shades of eggs from white to the darkest Brown of the Barnevelder poultry. So, you may have to just wait and see. What breed are the chickens you call brown-egg layers?? CJR

My other chickens are New hampshire reds and barred rocks . So I think I could tell the difference in there eggs . Ive had silkies before and i think there eggs are just kind of tinted . oh well guess every one sees different . bye meme
