Unsure of Rooster's parentage?

Hi,

I'm quite new to keeping chickens and needs some advise. I have 12 hens - 8 Rhode Island Reds and 4 of unknown breed (probably x-breeds). I also have a rooster that seems to be a bit of a mixed breed, although looks a lot like a plymouth rock. My question is, I would like to breed some chicks, but am unsure if using this rooster is ok or not. I only want the chicks for eggs in the future, but will using this rooster produce poor layers?
