For fun, I am trying to devlop a rumpless bantam araucana by crossing standard-size rumpless stock with bantam-size tailed "Americauna" stock. While I have never heard of a rumpless bantam araucana, I'm wondering if anyone else has evidence that they already exist. Also, any reasons to continue/discontinue this project or other suggestions?

Evidence can be found on page 38 of the ABA Bantam Standard, 1997 edition. Here you will find a complete description of the breed you seek to create. The ABA Bantam standard describes the Araucana in three types; Tufted Rumpless, Tufted and Tailed, and Non-Tufted and Rumpless. The ABA Standard lists the Araucana Bantam as common in the US, but I have yet to see one at a show in my five years of showing. I am assuming the statement was made sometime in the past when this breed was popular. This standard dates back to 1917 when the APA was still a producer's breed registry, and thus resisted the introduction of "useless" ornamental breeds.

If I remember correctly, the American Poultry Association voted this last November to strike any reference to the so-called "tailed" varieties, as most were in agreement that the presence of a tail indicated cross-breeding.

Hello everyone! I am brand new to the world of chickens and was lucky enough to discover this site. We have 14 Araucanas, of which, one is a rooster. Three of the Araucanas are 3 months old and 11 are 2 months old. I was wondering when are these chickens capable of reproducing? We have a friend who has Araucanas that are 1 1/2 years old and wants to borrow our rooster to fertilize some eggs for chick production. Before I say yes to him, I wanted more info about breeding chickens. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thank you. Just a personal note. Our three oldest are considered our pets and are responsive and friendly. They are named after "The Three Amigos," - Lucky (is the rooster), Ned ( our beautiful yellow chicken with the extremely deformed beak, we feed her baby chicken food because he can't eat the other stuff very well) and Dusty (our gorgeous brown female that care takes all the younger chickens). They like being around us very much. The other young ones are wilder and do not like being around us at all. Well, have a nice day. :) Claire

Do aracunas come in large or bantam size, or do they come in just bantam size. I need to know becuase i ordered some aracunas from a hatchery, and they did not mention the type. Also, does anyone know if {and what classes}you can show Aracunas in?

Yes, Araucanas come in both standard and bantam size. Hard to find as they might seem, they ARE out there. Since I am not expirianced in the showing of any birds, I cannot say what class to enter them in.
