In addition to a pile of table birds and egg-layers I recently purchased a very young pair of Barred Rocks. I'm interested in how large they get poundwise. They are growing at a tremendous rate and appear to be a very large bird...
It depends on whether you have bantams or standards.it also depends on whether or not they are purebred or commercial barred rocks.I will assume they are standards,so they could go anywhere from 8 to 12 lbs when fully mature.purebreds tend to grow somewhat slower than commercial varieties though .hens will naturally be somewhat smaller, and lay a brown egg.
Thank you! They are standards and as you state they are fairly large birds, these two will remain free roaming "pets" so it will be easier to spot them on the property than some of the bantams.
You will enjoy them, too. They are my favorite breed and I have way too many of them but cannot choose who to sell. I gave up trying to eat them...I'm not a vegetarian, but I've most definitely been charmed by them.
I have one Barred Rock hen and she is about to stop laying. She is the best pet I have every had. She meets me when I come home from work, she clucks and walks with me when I am out in the yard. They have wonderful personality and I have got to get a couple of new ones this spring.
Anonymous: I am starting a backyard flock and can only have "so many" chickens. For many reasons, I can not order from hatcheries at this time (min. are too much for a novice like me and I would prefer ordering from another enthusiast, etc.). I would be interested in purchasing a few chicks from you directly if that interests you.
