My friend wants to learn anything she can about splash cochins. I know that I got a lot of information on my topic so I was wondering if anybody can help her.
Splash cochins should be similiar to splashes in other breeds.
Dogwood Acres is mostly right, but has things just a little backwards. The blue allele is dominant (Bl) and the wild-type allele is recessive (bl). The blue allele dilutes the black color more than red. Blue breasted reds are Blbl birds. Splashes are usually black birds with two copies of the blue allele (BlBl). Having a double dose makes them mostly white instead of gray like the Blbl birds.
What the heck is a blue allele?

Here's how the color blue (andulusian) works. Blue is (Bb), Black is (BB) & splash is (bb). By crossing two blues (Bb) one theoretically gets 50% Blue (Bb), 25% Black (BB) & 25% Splash (bb).
By breeding Splash (bb) to Splash (bb) all one gets are splashes (bb). By breeding a Splash (bb) to a Black (BB) one gets 100% Blues (Bb).
One wants to breed blues to blacks to emphasize (darken) their blues, otherwise over time (generations) the color fades out.
Hope this helps. :-)
