Araucana Rooster

One of my chicks turned out to be a rooster. I like him and if my neighbors don't give me trouble I'll keep him. When I got them as chicks I was told it was an Araucana. I have been reading now and am not sure if it is an Americauna. I am wondering about his temperment. All my chicks eat out of my hand and I can hold most of them, some with a little chase. But now that I know he is a rooster I am a little nervous. I've seen what some can do. Anyway some feedback would be nice. By the way he made his first attempt to crow Friday. They are three months old. I have two barred rock, two Araucana and two (I'm not sure), maybe Hamburg. They look kind of like that. The Feedstore man called them lacy wings. Only one Araucana is a rooster. Well thanks

If you got your chicks through a feedstore, I doubt you have either araucana or ameraucana. Most of what is sold as araucana through hatcheries are really just crossed-up birds that happen to carry the dominant blue egg gene. If you are in this for fun, as most of us are, don't worry about it. The blue or green eggs are what you will enjoy, not the tufts or rumplessness. However you may find that all of your green egg birds don't lay green eggs. You might want to breed your ones that do. Weed out the ones that don't, and eventually you will have a flock that lays nothing but green eggs. As for temperament, since he is probably a crossbreed, it all depends on what his parents were. He might be aggressive or he might turn out to be a real pussy cat.
Good luck.
