"quivering?"

The Classroom @ The Coop: Poultry Health Archive: "quivering?"

We are newly discovering the joys of raising our 15 chicks. One Black Star, Alexandra, is particularly attentive and affectionate. At the sound of my voice she lifts her head high, runs in my direction and jumps into my hand to perch. She loves to be pet and is so relaxed she sits and falls asleep in my hand. I've noticed that she has a rythmic quiver or shiver when I hold her. Do you think she is cold or is this something chickens do . . . perhaps like a kitten's purr? The chicks are under a bulb in our bedroom (yes, we're hooked!!!) at a good 82-86 degrees. The room is a comfortable 75 and there are no drafts.
We have 10 Black Stars, 4 Reds, and 1 Barred Rock. We were told that they are all girls. We run them twice a day and give them plenty of "wing-fluttering" space. None of the others seems to duplicate this motion even though they get the same hand-on attention. Alexandra is clean, clear on the backside, and at 5 weeks old is feathering out nicely. We would appreciate any ideas on this condition. Thanks! Judy
