i have two hens that are setting in the same nest. there's another nest next to it which remains empty. when i went to pick the "unmarked" eggs this morning, i noticed that they are dirty. it seems like an egg broke so the hatching eggs are coated with eggs. i would like to clean the nest and wash the eggs. is this a smart move and what do i wash them with.

Do not wash eggs. Use a dry cloth to wipe them off or some fine sandpaper in the dirty spots (not all over the egg). Fresh laid eggs have a "bloom" on them that will protect them from outside elements. If you feel gross using the egg that hasn't been washed, and want to wash it, do so just before the egg is to be used. Good luck, Laurie
