Motherly Love or Just an Egg?

I know this sounds corny, but do chickens get attached to their eggs? I feel guilty when I gather eggs, like I'm stealing their baby from them. They work so hard for them! Does a chicken have a special "motherly" bond to her egg?

If she lays the egg then leaves the nest, take the egg. If she stays in the nest, doesn't eat or drink as much, and pecks or screeches at you when you try to collect, chances are she is broody and settling down for a long sit with chicks.
