Should I scrub the floor?

The Classroom @ The Coop: Incubation/Raising Chicks Archive: Should I scrub the floor?

My chicken barn has a cement floor and wooden walls. I'm expecting chicks this weekend (actually they are very small eggs that probably won't hatch, but...)
Do you really have to "sterilize" before chicks arrive? I have cleaned, but I haven't scrubbed the floors with bleach. Do I need to? I've never had disease out there before.
Should I leave the mother hen with her babies, or should I let mom back out with the rest of the flock? Is sawdust a good litter? Thanks for any advise.

I imagine its a bit late now and hope youve got it sorted out. I clean my shed (same thing concrete floor) about once a month with Jeyes fluid or other strong disinfectant I wouldnt use bleach myself. Try not to disturb your broody too much And yes I would leave the chicks with their mum as she does the best job of keeping them warm and safe. Sawdust is the best as far as chicks go. She will probably go back out with the rest of the flock herself with the chicks after a few days
