Will eggs that have been in a refrigerator hatch?

Bobr: I was always told by my mother to never store eggs to be hatched in the refrigerator. I know some breeders who do this regularly but I never have. They recommend that they be brought to room temperature before setting them under a hen or in the incubator. I never hold my hatching eggs over more than 3 or 4 days until I set them so really have no need for referigeration. If you live in a very hot place, the warmest spot in the refrigerator would be the best I would think. The thing to do is to experiment on your own and find out for yourself. You may be successful and can report back to us....Good Luck.....Red Tail Chicken Hawk......

Hello out there!! The first grade class did an experiment last year. They hatched out eggs that had been refrigerated and eggs that had not been refrigerated. The eggs that HAD BEEN refrigerated hatched at a highter percentage than those that had not been refrigerated.
From the 1st graders experiment, I will now start refrigerating my eggs I want to hatch out.

Lots more factors to consider besides being refrigerated or not. How old were the eggs in each storage mode before you "set" them? How long were the eggs refrigerated, and how long were the unrefrigerated eggs kept--and at what temperature? Did you check the temperature in the part of the fridge that the eggs were stored? Were all the eggs from the same flock? Did you candle the eggs at intervals to know the fertility of each group? What actual percentage of fertile eggs in each group hatched? I would not refrigerate my hatching eggs and I expect almost 100% hatch--would look for something else, if the hatch showed below 90% fertile. Actually have added refrigerated eggs to an incubator to fill it--not very good luck with those added eggs. So don't use just one criteria for hatch--but good luck whichever way you do it! CJR
