Candeling developing brown eggs

The Classroom @ The Coop: Incubation/Raising Chicks Archive: Candeling developing brown eggs

We have a hen that has been sitting on 7 brown eggs for six to seven days now. After reading some of the conversations here, we tried to see if the eggs are developing. We used a mag flashlight tonight, but cannot tell anything. The shells are too dark. It appears that 1/2 or part of the egg is darker than the rest but cannot see the veins as people have said we should. Is this because they are brown and harder to see through or are we using the wrong type of light. Any suggestions? Yes they should be fertile eggs as we do have a rooster! Thanks!!

At 7 days, seeing the veins is more difficult. I just look for darker shading (candle a non-incubated egg for comparison). I go by that to tell me any news on fertility.

I have a J.B. giant sitting on a brown egg for roughly three weeks. I candled the egg, and saw only a dark mass that seems shapeless. Is this the yolk, or is this a possible chick? It seems loose in the shell.

I've given up on candling brown eggs. I had a Barnevelder egg I was positive was a dud at 7 days, but I waited until 14 days to recheck it. Again, looked like a dud to me. Tossed it out and learned too late that it had been fertile and developing normally.

After that, I quit candling my Barnevelder and Marans eggs. I can't afford the really high end candlers and other than running out and holding it in front of the headlights of my truck, I just can't see a thing in there.

I know one of these days I'm going to have an egg explode in there, but so far the hatch rate has been nearly 100% so I've been lucky.

I used a toilet paper roll with a flashlight shone up one end and hold the egg on the other...in my bathroom with all the lights out! I candled a couple dark brown eggs & a duck egg, the duck egg I could see the heart beating(!!!!!)but the dark eggs(which were from Silkie Bantams)just appeared dark. The air cell was larger in the developing ones & I hatched 6 chicks! Try this candling method, it worked for me!
