O.K. This is weird! I dont like chickens or anything else i have to take care of (except my Kids). But we have a pond where a canadian goose layed a nest of eggs , she sat on these eggs about 2 weeks, our neighbors ducks stole the nest and the geese left, the duck is sitting on the eggs and thinks they are hers, but, the neighbors are moving in 3 days and taking the ducks!! They said they would take the nest too but my kids are crying and want to hatch the eggs themselves. So like any other time I said O.K.!!! Now what do I do? I dont have an incubator. Can I make one? They should hatch soon if they are going to. I know this has nothing to do with chickens, but, your all I got. Please help!!PLEASE!!

Dear Mayflan: The easiest way is to offer to buy the ducks that are setting on the goose eggs or offer to buy replacement ducks for them. This would be far cheaper than buying an incubator and trying to get it up and going with the right temperature and humidity by the time they will be moving. That way you could leave the ducks where they are to finish their hatch. They should be able to raise them as if they were their own. You will cherish these memories when your children are grown and moved away. Remember them often. Good luck....Red Tail Chicken Hawk...

We are doing a science experiment....can a chicken hatch a duck egg and will it act like a duck or act like a chicken?

A hatchling will imprint on whomever acts as it mother in the first few hours of life (don't let it be you - unless you enjoy having baby ducks following you into the bathroom). It may take on some of the characteristics of its mother. If a duckling is raised soley in the presence of chickens, it may suffer from what can only be called an identity crisis - trying to mate with chickens, or refusing the company of other ducks.

I am 7 years old and I think that the ducklings will act like the other ducks in the chicken yard because they will see them swimming and hear them quacking even though their moms are chickens.

Fabulous hypothesis, Annabugg! Please let me know how things turn out - I'm a science teacher, and I'd love to share your results with my students.
