brooding mother killed - help

The Classroom @ The Coop: Incubation/Raising Chicks Archive: brooding mother killed - help
By Irishracer on Saturday, May 1, 1999 - 07:03 pm:

my setting hen was just killed by dogs - we got to her before she died and I retrieved the warm eggs from the nest she had been sitting on for about 1 1/2 weeks. I am ordering an incubator - but right now have them on a heating pad on low with a light bulb above. Can anyone give me some advice on a makeshift solution until the incubator arrives? These are game eggs.

Am so sorry--it is heartbreaking. Can you call everyone you know who might have a setting hen to put them under? (take the eggs there and later borrow the hen in her nesting box) Heat pad and light will "dry out" the eggs, and there is no way to keep the eggs a constant 100f. Or ask if anyone has an incubator going? Even if you get one in just a day or two, it takes a few days to get one running at the right temperature and humidity. Does your radio station run special requests? Often they will post lost or found dogs or other animals. Maybe someone else can give you better advice. CJR
