Raising a runt

The Classroom @ The Coop: Incubation/Raising Chicks Archive: Raising a runt
By Mamachick on Friday, May 7, 1999 - 11:18 pm:

Just received 20 chicks two weeks ago. Half are golden sex link and half are banded plymouth rock. All are thriving and feathering out, but one is about 1/2 to 2/3 the size of the others and is feathering more slowly. He/she eats regularly, drinks fine and is not yet picked on by the others. Will this be a problem. The kids are attached to this little runt. Any reason for this inadequate growth? Any problems down the pike? Should we keep this one separate from the rest when we move them to the coop next week?

Mamachick: I've had this problem! We ended up giving the runt free run of the yard, while the others ranged in a penned area. It worked well - but don't clip its wings! Since it won't have the protection of a coop, it will need to roost in a tree or other high spot at night. Our's seemed to prefer the garage rafters. Just be sure the car's not underneath!

I had a runt chick myself, cute little thing. Turned out to be a hen. But, I hand fed it opening it's mouth and forcing watered down mash in it's beak. It took 2 weeks to get it past whatever was wrong with it. It cought up in size to the others too. We called it "PUNY". I also gave it bee pollen and electrolytes in the water.

We had 13 polish, got them 1 day old. When we picked them up 1 was shaking like a leaf she road home bundled up in a towel. We were determined not to let her die, gave her CPR twice, hand fed her and she now has her own room in the house. She goes outside everyday to get her bugs and worms. She lay's 1 egg every day, and her name is " Squirt". today she is in good health and she visits her sisters and brothers everyday.
