pasted chicks

have some bantam cochin chicks 4 days old , a few are pasted up on the back end,what is the least stressfull way to remove the build up?pulling it off dry seems rough.should i dampen it first?this just started today. THANKS!!!!!!!

Yes, you should dampen with warm water and a rag. It will soften and come off fairly quickly. If you try to remove it dry, you can pull off skin, too. It's important to remove this build-up ASAP as it is blocking the flow and can do damage internally, otherwise. One of the causes of pasting is being too hot, so make sure you've got your brooder temp set at 95 degrees at chick-height for the first week and lower 5 degrees each successive week until it's 70-75. Pasting can also be caused by the stress of shipping, so add 3 TBS of sugar per quart of water for a few days to help, if that's the case. Good luck with your new biddies!
